Bulgaria offers great summer resort as well as modern winter resorts such as Borovetz, Pamporovo, Bansko, Chepelare and others. There is a perfect combination of warm see and high snowy mountains, suitable both for skiing and winter tourism. The winter resorts are situated in different mountains, but all the resorts offer everything you need to spend a great winter vacation. Skiing is very well-established in Bulgaria, with the winter season running from December to April.

Mountain Vitosha, just a couple of miles south of Sofia, is the most accessible of all ski areas in Bulgaria. This is the highest ski resort of Bulgaria. The mountain is good for skiing in the winter and trekking in the summer. The main skiing area is under the highest peak in Vitosha - Cherni vryh. Vitosha offers excellent conditions for snow sports, with huge skiing areas and many slopes with powder, but last few years the skiing infrastructure and the hotels in the mountain were not developed according to the needs of the tourists. The ski runs of Vitosha are various and would be suitable for skiers and boarders of any level. Vitosha offers six ski runs with various difficulty and length. All ski runs have the necessary facilities. The snow sometimes cover reaches a thickness of 1.5 m. There are good conditions for slalom and cross-country skiing, as well as for tours on foot throughout the mountain. Vitosha offers a variety of hiking trails, most of which are accessible throughout the winter as well. Vitosha is easily accessible by car or bus from Sofia, with several city transport lines going to different places in the mountain.

Bansko ski resort is situated in South-Western Bulgaria at the foot hills of one of the most beautiful Bulgarian mountains Pirin. Bansko is the newest Bulgarian winter resort, recently discovered by the foreign tourists; Bansko provides an interesting combination of the virgin nature of The Pirin Mountain and the atmosphere of the ancient Bulgarian small towns. The Pirin Mountain is a natural preserve included in the World Natural Heritage list. The distance between Sofia and Bansko is 160 km. Bansko has the best snow record and the longest ski season (15 Dec - 15 May) of all Bulgarian ski resorts. The town of Bansko is located on 925 m. above sea level, and its skiing area is on 2000-2600 m. The ski pistes are located in two main ski-centers. They are approximately 10 kilometers above the town on the northern slopes of Pirin. The resort has excellent snow conditions with great snow cover from December until May. There are two brand new pistes and for the extreme skier there is the so called fun- park zone. These pistes are wonderfully defining the net of totally 14 pistes. The highest ski piste is on 2600 meters above the sea level. Bansko offers great variety of ski pistes that can satisfy everyone's tastes and abilities.

The oldest Bulgarian winter resort is Borovetz. Lots of world ski championships were organized here. It is located at 1350 above the sea level on the northern slopes of Rila mountain among age-old pine woods, at the foot of peak Mousala the highest one on the Balkan peninsula. Borovetz is easily accessible, being at a distance of 73 km from Sofia and 126 km from Plovdiv. The nearest town is Samokov, which is 10 km far from the resort. The excellent equipment for ski sports attracts thousands of mountain lovers from Bulgaria and from foreign countries. They can use the 45 kilometers various in difficulty and length ski pistes grouped in three regions. The resort is a regular host of various winter sports competitions. It has twice hosted World Cup competitions in Alpine skiing. Its biathlon track is one of the best in Europe. The slopes of Borovetz have a permanent snow cover from November to May, more than 1.5 m thick. The air in Borovetz is crystal - clear and free of any pollutants. The average temperature during the coldest month January is - 3.6 ° C. There are available ski runs for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers, designed with international markings and multilingual signs. Pistes are bashed and maintained to the high standard. This resort is known as the most interesting ski centre regarding party time. Been catering for foreign tourists for many years now, the staffs are known to be friendly and professional. There are available restaurants and taverns with Bulgarian national folk music and 'horo' dancing, which some people find very interesting.

Pamporovo is a modern ski resort in the heart of the Rhodopes Mountain. It is the sunniest Bulgarian mountain resort with wonderful snow throughout the whole season. Pamporovo is situated on 1650 m above the sea level at the foot of peak Snejanka. It is 240 km far from Sofia and 85 km from Plovdiv. The gentle profile of the mountain with its rounded slopes and summits makes Pamporovo particularly suitable for beginners and expert skiers. All ski ruins are safe guarded and maintained in a very good condition. They are located between 1926 and 1450 m above the sea level on the northern, eastern and western slopes of The Snejanka peak. Excellent ski schools are available in the resort. The modern hotels offer all facilities for pleasant holiday making. Lots of pleasant restaurants, discos and night clubs are open for you to spend great time during your vacation.
