How a foreigner can become a resident of Bulgaria


To obtain a permanent residence you must spend at least five years in Bulgaria, according to the long-term stay conditions. Becoming a Bulgarian resident will give you all rights of a Bulgarian citizen, but you will not be able to vote. You will have the opportunity to enter and leave the country as many times as you want.
If you want to get Bulgarian residence you should get a long-term stay permit, which will be valid for one year and can be renewed each year. At that time you should issue a Bulgarian Identity Card, which is compulsory for every Bulgarian citizen. After you have spent five years in the country you should apply for permanent residence.
For obtaining the long-term permit you need to present the following documents:
 - a valid D type visa
 - national insurance or social security in the country
 - you should open a bank account in Bulgaria with minimum BGN 3 000 in it
You can apply for type D visa at the Bulgarian Embassy in your country. The proof of national insurance or social security can be issued from your local national insurance office
